EXTENSIVE WORK PERFORMED IN 2010-2011:
• New fiberglass over plywood foredeck with non skid surface.
• Replaced both exhaust backing plates at transom.
• Replaced both intermediate cutlass bearings.
• Replace forward head intake.
• Repair stuffing box and change hose.
• Sister-framed three frames in galley.
• Repaired fiberglass at port chine.
• Replace forward thru hull fitting.
• Repainted aft bulkhead after repairing some soft wood (at forward end of cockpit).
• Stanchion brackets on swim platform have been rebedded.
• The portside aft spray rail was refastened and rebedded after being lifted by a travel lift.
HULL & DECK:
- Hard chined, semi displacement hull, offering fast speeds (These 53' Huckins hulls were used as PT boats during WWII).
- The hull planking is double 3/8" diagonal Philippine mahogany glued with resorcinal resin and fastened with copper clinch nails and bronze screws.
- The hull is sheathed in 20 oz. fiberglass cloth set in epoxy.
- The decks and superstructure tops are sheathed in 10 oz. fiberglass cloth set in epoxy.
- The deck is 3/4" marine plywood over 1"x2" deck beams, glassed over.
- The superstructure is 3/4" marine plywood, glassed over.
- This type of construction is equivalent to cold molded construction of today utilizing a natural material which results in excellent insulation from sound and temperature.
- Engine and vee drive beds are four vertically mounted 2" side bolted to the frames.
- There are four bulkheads (3 are watertight):Forepeak, ahead of Hold A, aft of Hold B, and ahead of engine compartment. The three aft bulkheads are fitted with limber hole valves.
- The interior bilge planking has been epoxy coated also.
- Frames are 1"x3" sawn white oak on approximate 14" centers with double 1/2" plywood floor timbers and chime gussets, glued and bolted to the frames.
Fuel: 500 gallons in one Monel tank under salon sole.
Water: Approximately 200 gallons in Monel tank under salon sole.
Holding: Approximately 10 gallons in poly tank.
ENGINES & MECHANICAL:
- Twin GM 8V-71 N diesels, 325 hp, FWC.
- Engine hours: 1973 original hours as seen on meters; approximately 500 since complete rebuilds.
- Cruising speed: 16 knots @ 1900 RPM.
- Maximum speed: 19 knots @ 2300 RPM.
- 32V starting motors and 32V belt driven alternator on the starboard engine, and a 12V alternator on the port engine.
- Exhaust: cast iron raw water cooled exhaust manifolds connected to rubber exhaust hose, thence to fiberglass mufflers, to bronze through hull fittings.
- Gears: Allison M10 hydraulic gears with 1.06:1 reduction.
- Huckins M56 V drives with 1.38:1 reduction.
- Controls are S/S aircraft cable working via chain and sprocket, with 1/4" wire cable for the rudders and 1/16" wire cable for the separate throttle and gear leavers.
- Racor 1000 fuel separator/filter per engine.
- Both engines have received a complete rebuild (see comments).
- Raw water cooled exhaust manifold with exhaust hose to Aqualift muffler and hose to bronze through hull.
- 3 bladed 24x24 bronze propellers.
- 1 3/4" S/S shafts.
- Two banks of four 8V lead acid heavy duty batteries for 32 volt engine starting and ship's service; plus two 12V 8D batteries for navigation equipment are chocked in battery boxes in Hold B. The generator 12V starting battery is boxed and covered in the engine compartment aft of the generator. (NOTE: It is suggested that all batteries be replaced due to their age).
- The electrical distribution room located aft of Hold B has labeled AC & DC circuit breaker panels.
- There are volt and amp meters for the AC shoreline input.
- Onan 12 KW 110/220V AC diesel generator, with 2188 hours, 4 cylinder, 4 cycle FWC, 12V start located between main engines. Generator has low oil pressure, high temperature automatic shutdown. Racor 500 separator/filter for generator.
- There is voltmeter for the generator output at the helm. A battery charge indicator (volt meter) is also located at the helm. There is a boost transformer on the shoreline input circuit. Knife switches provide master disconnect for each 32V bank of batteries. A placard in the engine compartment indicates a negative ground system.
- There are two 50 amp 110V shore cords with various adapters.
- Sentry 30 amp 32V battery charger & 20 amp 12V charger.
- Two air conditioning compressors with raw water cooling pumps in three zones.
- 6 gallon hot water heater located in Hold A.
- Commodious accommodations for 6-8 in three cabins with three separate heads.
- Forepeak with anchor rode storage compartment.
- Next aft are crew quarters with upper and lower berths, hanging locker, and head compartment to starboard with stall shower, S/S Pullman sink, and Raritan electric W.C.
- Next on same level is full galley to port with 4 burner Hillerange gas stove with oven, Litton microwave and stand-up GE 110V refrigerator/freezer. To starboard is a galley extension with shelves and cabinets.
- Up three steps is the salon with a fold-down sofa bed to port, coffee table, several occasional chairs, and a beige carpet.
- Further aft and down four steps is a passageway with the electrical room to starboard, a guest stateroom to port with over and under berths, and a guest head to starboard with stall shower.
- Next aft is the master stateroom with twin berths port and starboard, a hanging locker, another hanging locker adapted to house a Washer/Dryer, and a head compartment with stall shower, W.C. and sink.
- Further aft and up five steps is a companionway door to the cockpit with the engines under the cockpit sole.
- From the salon and up five steps is the semi-enclosed bridge deck with full hardtop and opening sun hatch, and clear Isinglass enclosure.
- The helm console is on the center line forward with a double companion seat to port, and a swivel helm seat.
- Also, there is a cabinet with a small refrigerator/icemaker, and built-in generously-sized lounge seating aft, with table and two wicker chairs, and beige carpet.
- Headroom: 6'4".

COMMENTS: The Huckins 53 Linwood Motor Cruiser is a masterpiece of Huckins engineering with twin 325 hp diesels mounted under the stern cockpit, offering a fast and quiet ride, in an easy-to-handle family cruiser. Her spacious layout offers two comfortable staterooms with two heads, a crews quarters forward for two with a separate head, a "down galley" and mid cabin "living" salon. On deck is a large weather protected helm and bridgedeck with U-shaped seating, table and wicker chairs. Further aft is a roomy aft cockpit area.
SEA SPIRIT'S knowledgeable owner purchased the vessel in 1983 and has carefully and lovingly maintained her since. He is proud to say he has been a "hands-on" owner. Both Detroit diesels have been removed and professionally rebuilt - the port engine was rebuilt in 1998 in Kennebunk, Maine and the starboard engine was rebuilt in 1987 in Florida. 1973 hours are showing on the meters and the meters were never reset - there are approximately 500 hours since the rebuilds.
