Morphée is a beautiful classic yacht, built in 1964 in La Rochelle, France, by a specialist wooden boat building company. Five yachts of similar design were built. Morphée’s hull is mahogany, consisting of double diagonal construction bounded by cold moulded strip planking to make for an extremely strong structure. Her decks are teak-laid over marine plywood. She spent much of her early life in Australia. She returned to British waters in the early nineties when she was sailed single handedly back from Australia to Cornwall. In 2003 she came adrift from her moorings during severe gales and was driven towards the breakwater where she sustained a hole below the water line and sank. The insurers would not pay out and the boat had to be sold. It was in early 2004 that the current owner bought her and set about restoring her. Work commenced in 2004 when the hole that had caused her to sink was professionally repaired. This has been fully surveyed and no doubts have been raised about the quality of the repair. The hull was stripped back to bare wood, inside and out, and all the electrics removed. However, work tailed off for various reasons unconnected with the yacht. During this time she was stored in a shed protected from the elements. It was not until 2007 that an extensive refit could begin in earnest. The coach-house roof was re-built, new hatches and windows fitted, the interior was completely repainted, new electrics and engine installed as well as new heads and cooker. She was re-launched in May 2008 and has provided much joy and adventure over the last four years. In 2011 further work was carried out including repainting of the hull, varnishing the coach-house and further work to the interior. Morphée has benefitted from an extensive period of care and refitting and is now ready to cope with the next 48 years!!
