The Columbia 50 is said to be big enough to be comfortable and fast enough to win major ocean races and yet not too big to be owner maintained. Really designed as a race boat, the Columbia 50 first hit the race scene in 1966 finishing first overall in the Newport-Ensenada Race that year against a field of over 500 other boats. Not long thereafter, in the hotly competitive Transpac Race to Hawaii, a Columbia 50 won its class of 24 and finished 2nd overall. Numerous other successes followed.
Surveyor notes on this vessel (2010): "The Harken equipment found on board is most complete and makes for an easier job of handling this size vessel with very little crew, including the Harken electric primary winches." "The bottom of the vessel was completely inspected and sounded during this survey to determine if there was any delamination or builder voids. No structural problems were found at this time." "The exterior condition appears to be very good. The topside surfaces of the hull are painted red and appear to be free of oxidation and abrasion." "The interior cosmetic condition is very good. The interior is very clean and well organized and presents itself well. The cabin sole is finished bright. The galley is ceramic tiled." "The vessel appears to be watertight and structurally sound. The equipment found on board appeared to be in good condition. This vessel should be considered a comfortable and safe pleasure craft for long distance offshore cruising and an excellent marine insurance risk. In view of the foregoing, it is the opinion of this marine surveyor, that the present value of the stated vessel is well above average."
