Built in Sydney, Australia during 1967/8 'Rainbow' is a unique boat with a fascinating history and is reluctantly offered for sale following more than 30 years of ownership in the one family.
Having made passage to the UK from Australia under her own hull via the Pacific and Panama during 1973/4 her Northerly migration finished on Scotland's West Coast. The double ended classically designed timber hull is ideally suited to long distance cruising, offering comfortable and practical sea going accommodation for a crew of 6. Throughout the current family ownership the boat has been continually and professionally maintained.
An interesting wooden boat which has provided much enjoyment over the years and is ready to sail off on further adventures with new owners. Wintering ashore on the Clyde, please call office to arrange viewings.
The boat is fitted with a masthead sloop rig with the mast being deck stepped and all spars of alloy construction including the whisker pole with all stainless steel standing rigging. All standing rigging was replaced in 2001 with all running rigging being subject to continual replacement and upgrading in recent years. A Profurl roller reefing (2001) system is fitted on the forestay for the genoa with lazy jacks having been fitted to the mast and boom to assist with stowing of the mainsail.
The boat has been designed with the double ended hull topped with a flush deck, fitted with a central centre cockpit and doghouse.
The hull is constructed of Oregon pine planking on spotted gum frames, the hull being painted white above the waterline and finished with red antifouling beneath. Planks are secured to the frames in the traditional fashion with copper clenches, keel bolts securing the iron keel are of stainless steel. The flush deck is constructed of Bruynzeel marine plywood, sheathed with a West Epoxy laminate skin; finished with Treadmaster bordered panels. The dog house is an addition to the original design and is bolt in place, therefore removable or replaceable with something of a differing design if preferred.
The flush design of the deck makes moving around the boat extremely easy due to large clear open space. The foredeck effectively starts forward of the doghouse and runs all the way to the bow, movement around the deck is only hindered by the shrouds, mast and three deck hatches. The manual windlass is mounted centrally at the boat and allows the anchor to be recovered with the chain stowing automatically in the chain locker. substantial guard wires run the full length of the deck uninterrupted.
The stout doghouse provides full shelter of the cockpit forward end, yet its narrow design limits any obstruction to forward vision from the helm position. Solid timber grabrails are provided on either side of the doghouse top providing crew with additional security when moving through the short section of narrowed side deck. The cockpit its self is of generous proportions, raised varnished timber coamings run aft from the doghouse providing additional shelter for the aft end of the cockpit. Seating is provided around the cockpit sides with the helm being positioned at the aft end, storage is provided in a locker beneath the port cockpit seat. At the forward end of the cockpit the companionway to below decks is slightly offset to port with a large working surface being provided to starboard and serving as the navigation station. At the aft end of the cockpit a small companionway provides access to the aft cabin. When not in use a Tonneau style cover is provided to shelter the cockpit while a tent style cover can be used when aboard providing shelter for the whole cockpit.
Below decks the boat has been finished to a good standard with all joinery being of practical design and sturdy construction in cedar, teak and mahogany. Being predominantly finished in white with satin varnished timber trims the interior feels bright and spacious yet comfortable and cosy. All upholstery was replaced during 2012.
The forepeak provides 2 single bunks in a V-formation with infill sections creating a well sized double bunk when require. Storage is provided throughout the cabin with a selection of lockers overhead and large cave style lockers beneath; a small hanging locker is provided at the aft end of the cabin.
Laid out with the saloon table offset to port and an L-shaped settee and single bench style settee to starboard the saloon provides an additional two single bunks. A single folding leaf extends the table surface to starboard creating a large table for a full crew to dine at in comfort. A small deck is provided at the forward end of the starboard bunk providing a secondary, compact, below decks area for navigation works.
To starboard at the aft end of the saloon is the separate heads compartment with manual sea toilet, stainless steel sink and timber vanity/first aid lockers.
The compact galley is sighted to port of the companionway and laid out in a U-shape. Fitted out with Taylors twin burner cooker and oven, stainless steel sink and coolbox. Storage is provided in a series of lockers and drawers. Water supplies are manually pumped with fresh and salt water available at the sink.
The small aft cabin accessed via a separate companionway at the aft end of the cockpit provides two further single berths in a v-formation.
Rainbow has been sailed from Ardfern and cruised on the west coast by the present owner and young family over the last 7 years. She provides safe and comfortable passage making and a excellent cruising accommodation. She is reluctantly offered for sale due to present family commitments elsewhere.
