Tusitala is a custom-build wooden cutter with a proven blue water track record. She was built in 1971 by John Townsend, winner of the Blue Water Cruising Award in the 1950’s and Chief Designer for Howard Hughes’ Spruce Goose. Townsend put his considerable talent and expertise into creating a strong and comfortable vessel which could take his family anywhere in complete safety. Only the best materials were used in her construction and she has been lovingly maintained ever since.
Over the years the Townsend family and friends have sailed Tusitala 30,000+ miles, through the waters of the Americas, Hawaii, Caribbean, Galapagos and the South Pacific. They are looking for a special new caretaker that will continue to love and enjoy Tusitala as much as they do. More on the history of the boat and her family's story can be found in the March 2015 edition of Latitude 38 Magazine.
Tusitala's sole sistership, Windflower, built by Herme Herminson, has sailed around the world several times and is currently moored in San Diego, CA.
