Transition is one of the very popular Tollycraft 48 series. She is a semi displacement cockpit motor yacht. She is one of the “original” heavy built editions and her robust construction is evident throughout. The electrical and mechanical systems have been updated and upgraded, making Transition quite possibly the best built, engineered and outfitted Tollycraft 48 ever to come on the market. Transition has been owned and upgraded for the last ten years by one of the most respected technical advisors in the marine engine industry, Bob Senter. If you are tuned in to the trawler world you may know him better as “Lugger Bob” a diesel engine guru who has consulted with dozens of builders and hundreds of owners in his storied and still active career. This is an excellent opportunity for you as a buyer to purchase an entry level, solid trawler that has been carefully looked after by a maestro. An added bonus is that the lucky new owner will receive three days of orientation and training from Bob Senter which could only be valued as priceless. (Would this be like getting driving lessons from Michael Schumacher?).

With a two-cabin interior layout, walk-around deck, aft cockpit, wide swim step, flybridge, and comfortable ride, Transition is a great cruising boat in any region, but with air-conditioning and dedicated diesel heat, she is especially well equipped for the Northwest where she has spent the majority of her life afloat. Transition has doubled an outstanding waterfront live aboard home. She is very open layout, providing great visibility to your surroundings and has loads of storage accommodations. This Tollycraft design has the staterooms forward and aft for privacy with the added convenience of the saloon in the middle and the helm area forward to starboard. The galley and dinette are forward of the saloon. Business obligations have created the need to put her on the market, creating an excellent opportunity for the right buyer.
Transition has enjoyed many days cruising in the Pacific Northwest over several seasons and last year had a smooth trip down the coast from Seattle to her present berth in sunny San Diego, CA.
Always staying ahead of the maintenance game and always looking for little areas to improve, Transition underwent a hull surface renewal by Platypus Marine in June of 2010. Platypus, a highly regarded boatyard in Port Angeles, Washington, replaced the original gelcoat with epoxy, and applied new high-quality bottom paint.
In addition, the clean, beautiful sheer line of this Ed Monk, Sr. design gives Transition a profile that will never go out of style. This is a timeless trawler that is exceptionally equipped and a tremendous value.
Interior Layout - General:
There are two sliding doors outboard forward in the saloon for easy entry. Arriving from the starboard side deck through the starboard side door you are apporach the salon-lower helm station. The salon has plenty of natural light through large windows forward and outboard. There is a comfortable L-shaped settee aft and to port with a teak table for dining. Forward to port is a great counter area (set up like a bar counter) so you can converse with anyone working in the galley. On the starboard side across from the salon are two chairs. This is a very spacious saloon/pilothouse with an incredibly open feeling. You are a few short steps aft to the master stateroom and a couple of steps forward to the galley, dinette and guest cabin.
The lower helm station is to starboard at the forward end of the salon. There is an exceptionally well organized array of instruments, and a durable, well designed electrical distribution panel that was built far ahead of its time. A raised Pompanette helm chair completes the helm station complement.
Just inboard of the helm station there are a few steps leading down to the galley situated to port and a dinette table with opposing settees on the starboard side. This is a marvelous set up, you can talk across to the helm from the galley and at dinner time you can prepare the meal, and then slide right over to enjoy your feast. Again, there is plenty of natural light from the windscreen above, and the side windows port and starboard.
Forward of the galley is the guest stateroom with vee berth, and head ensuite. The vee berth cushions have been upholstered. This is a cozy stateroom and has the added benefit of maximum separation between this sleeping area and the master all of the way aft.
Aft of the saloon and down a few steps is the master stateroom. The double bed on the port side extending athwhartships has been nicely reconfigured as a walk-around, versus the standard offset double with only a single side access. This is a roomy stateroom with great light and ventilation, easy to move around in and convenient access to the cockpit aft where you can move about up to the flybridge or inside and forward to the lower helm. There is a head with separate stall shower in the port forward area of the master. Aft in the master is a set of steps and companionway access to the aft cockpit.

Engines/Engine Room/Fuel System:
Engine room access is easy through the lifting steps at the forward end of the salon. The engines have been re-rated with special injectors for fuel economy, long engine life, and no smoke. This engine room has been wonderfully thought out and Bob Senter has added his personal touches to make it as practical and serviceable as possible. If you can arrange a tour here with Bob, bring your tape recorder and take notes!

Listing Broker’s comments:
Transition is an exceptional motor yacht. She is a USCG documented vessel. Any vessel over twenty years old will show signs of aging, but Transition has been meticulously looked after and is very well presented. The living areas are spacious and comfortable making her a wonderful live aboard. For two to six people, this is a fantastic coastal cruiser. The engine room is particularly impressive. Bob Senter has done an incredible number of upgrades and it is clear that the ideas he has advised others to undertake on their boats are the result of his first hand experience aboard Transition. This is the type of trawler that could serve as a buyer’s entry level introduction to the trawler lifestyle, and could just as easily remain that same buyer’s final boat – in either case Transition represents an incredible opportunity and is worth a closer look. Please get in touch if you would like additional information.
Transition is an exceptionally well-maintained Tollycraft 48 Cockpit Motor yacht, the model considered by many experts to be the best fiberglass coastal cruising yacht under 50’. Tolly 48’s combine a spacious aft-cabin motor yacht and a large cockpit for fishing, lounging and line handling, with easy entry and exit via a transom door. Wide, full walk-around decks with raised bulwarks and sturdy varnished teak handrails provide secure, comfortable footings in any weather. The huge flybridge includes twin helm chairs, bench seats and plenty of space for entertaining. The Ed Monk Sr. hull design incorporates a very fine entry, soft chines and long keel. Displacing 55,000 lbs., Transition, like other early production Tolly 48’s, has a well-earned reputation for superb handling and a safe, comfortable ride in all conditions thanks to much heavier construction, ballasted keel and heavy-duty engines.
The bright, spacious engine room makes routine maintenance pleasant and easy. Her simple, rugged and reliable 6-71 Detroit Diesels have been re-rated with special fuel injectors for maximum fuel economy, long engine life and no smoke. She cruises very efficiently at 10 knots and can exceed 15 knots when necessary. Transition is extremely well equipped and always maintained in turn-key condition, ready to cruise. Transition is a tremendous value, with upgraded engines, systems, new epoxy bottom (2010).
With her upgraded interior and rerated engines, Transition is more than competitive with ‘90s models while providing the strength, stability, ride and handling for which early models are famous.
