"Some designs succeed so well in the marketplace that they earn the distinction of being industry classics. Such a boat is the Hatteras 53 Motoryacht. Two decades in production, the Hatteras 53 Motoryacht became the standard by which other motor yachts in her size range were measured. Her bi-level, three stateroom, three head floor plan is considered ideal in a Motoryacht of this size and the split engine rooms soon became a Hatteras trademark. Notable updates include the addition of stall showers to the guest and forward head in 1975, a redesigned low profile Flybridge in 1977, an optional walk around queen bed in the master stateroom in 1978, and an increased fuel capacity (to 700 gal.) in 1980. Early models with the GM8-71N diesels will cruise @ 13 knots and reach a top of 16 knots. The larger *V-71TI's improve the cruising speed to around 16 knots with a top speed of 19 knots. Resale values for Hatteras 53 Motoryacht remain strong in all markets."
