Compadre is a very special, one-off, practical pilothouse cutter, custom built by the highly respected Willard Boat Company in Costa Mesa, California.
She was designed by the well-known noted architect, William Lapworth , known for his famous Cal 40 design. The Lapworth 55 was modeled after the popular Cal Cruising 46, incorporating the same moderate displacement, low wetted surface, long waterline and balanced spade rudder. For passage making comfort and the optimum trade-off between shoal draft and effective lateral resistance, the Lapworth 55’s keel is relatively long and shallow (6 feet). By establishing a ballast/displacement ratio of 33 percent, drawing a decidedly finer entry, and firming up the bilges amidships, Lapworth helped the new design’s stability and pointing ability and thus made her a better performer to windward. She is fitted with Harken roller furling units on both her moderate-sized headsails and her medium aspect-ratio mainsail is also roller furling (Hood Stoway).
Lapworth took great pains to make his long-legged sailboat a pleasant place to live. The pilothouse and cockpit comprise an all-weather sailing center with not only inside and outside steering stations, but also a galley, dinette and nav station in the pilothouse. Decks are wide and clean, and electrically powered Barient 28s provide muscle when it is needed, as do the electric anchor winches installed (with roller chocks) both fore and aft. Hatches permit direct access from the deck to the engine room and shower. Dorades, hatches and port lights throughout provide healthy amounts of light and air below.

Starting from the bow, after the chain locker is the crew cabin with one berth, storage space, a sink and a head. There is access to the deck through a hatch. Next is the guest full head with shower and head, accessible through the crew cabin and guest cabin, followed by the guest cabin, composed of two berths, one above the other (the lower being almost a full double), hanging locker, chest of drawers, and storage closet. Proceeding aft and up three steps is the raised pilot house with full galley to starboard and navigation/steering station to port. The dining table and settees are further aft, next to the companionway, with plenty of storage space. Down a few steps is the master stateroom/salon with Luke fireplace, desk, cedar hanging locker, large chest of drawers, one berth/settee on each side and a settee with fold-out queen bed amidships, facing aft. Next is a full head with stall shower and large vanity. On the starboard side is access to a large engine room with standing headroom, a workbench with tool storage starboard, next to the generator and watermaker. To port is storage area plus 50 gallon fuel day tank, water heater and various pumps. Both the master stateroom and the engine room are accessible from the deck. The fuel (300 gallons) and water (250 gallons) stainless steel tanks and abundant storage space are located under the pilothouse floor. All living and accommodation areas are fully air conditioned and heated. This vessel is maintained in very good working condition as she is used by the owners on a regular basis. She is also hauled out every year for inspection and anti-fouling paint.
COMPADRE’s unique layout:
COMPADRE’s layout has four special living spaces that you don’t often find, even on a much larger boat.
The flush-deck center cockpit can comfortably seat (8) people on the cushioned port and starboard settees. The Bimini has Eisenglass curtains on three sides, creating an all-weather helm station. The curtains can be raised to make the cockpit completely open. All lines lead to winches in the cockpit making it possible for one person to handle the boat under sail.
On passage, the dinghy is stored here. Once it is launched, the chocks are removed creating a living area shaded by the aft awning and flush with the cockpit. The dining table and four chairs can be set up here for dining al fresco or moved into the cockpit for an arrangement for (6). This area is rarely found on any sailboat and makes for an enjoyable experience in a secluded anchorage.
The spacious raised pilothouse encompasses a second helm station, the navigation station, and the galley with a raised dinette, seating (6). The nine large windows with two opening ports and an on-deck hatch provide a 270 degree view with plenty of ventilation or the area can be fully air-conditioned if desired. It is a joy to spend time here, being able to see all the outside activity.
Another unique feature on COMPADRE is the design of the master stateroom. By day, it is an elegant study, with three settees, a TV, Luke fireplace, extensive bookshelves and a writing or computer desk. Perfect for after dinner relaxing or during inclement weather. At night, the forward settee pulls out to a queen size bed.
The navigation station and second helm station are located on the forward port side of the pilothouse. There is a chart table/desk with drawers and file cabinet. Also 5 large chart drawers and extra storage lockers.
Large walk-in full headroom engine room, accessible from the aft salon and from the main deck. Large work bench with vise and tool storage cabinet with built-in drawer and extensive tool inventory. Large storage areas for spare parts, tools, oils, supplies, etc.
Extensive spare parts inventory for all systems.
Engine Room Equipment:
Main engine: M135 135 HP Perkins Diesel, 1900 hours, with 160 amp alternator and engine-driven compressor, with cockpit control panel (new 2010)
This area is located below the pilot house sole with access through a large hatch adjacent to the navigation station. There is a huge amount of storage area and the following equipment is located here:
