Unique opportunity to purchase one of these sought after Cruiser/Racers. Built by MG Yachts of Greenock to a Rob Humphries design with many owner improvements made over the last 4 years. New mast, boom, spinnaker pole, standing rigging and Dyneema running rigging. Racing sails include brand new tri-radial main and No3 jib whilst the Pentex laminate No1 is as new. Full set of cruising sails to suit all conditions.
When Jeremy Rodgers stopped building the Contessa 27, MG yachts took over the rights to this popular design. Rob Humphries, the successful and renowned yacht designer, had produced the design, and although Rogers had only built around 12 Contessa 27's, MG felt there would be a market and thus the MGC27 was launched. Although companies such as Jaguar Yachts and Northshore, who ended up buying MG Yachts at a later date, built the MGC27 under licence, this is an MG built MGC27.
GRP constructed yacht with fin keel , transom hung rudder with tiller steering. The keel is made of lead which is 100kgs heavier than the standard iron keeled versions. This gives a lower centre of gravity making her very reassuring as a cruising boat and the equivalent of 2 extra crew on the side deck when racing. Large self bailing cockpit with angled back rests for comfort. Large sail locker to starboard. The boat feels secure and that is thanks to the robust stainless steel pushpit and pulpit rails. These are joined by a double set of stainless steel wire and stanchions. The side decks are wide enough to negotiate without much trouble and there are handily placed wooden grab rails on the top of the raised coachroof. Self bailing anchor locker with lid at bow.
Vessel powered by a Volvo Penta MD2001 inboard diesel engine with sail drive unit. This economical 9 hp unit is housed beneath the companionway steps in a sound proofed compartment. The engine, although the original, is well maintained and always serviced annually. The sail drive is fitted with a 2-Bladed folding propeller and had a new seal fitted in 2013. There is an engine start panel at the top of the companionway steps with exhaust temperature readout and both visual and audible warnings for oil pressure, water temperature and charging. Single lever engine control in cockpit next to helm.
12V system with 2x 110 amp batteries providing engine start and domestic power. These were installed new in 2013 and are recharged via the engine alternator. 12V switch panel at chart table.
This yacht is fitted with a taller rig than other MGC 27 models giving her more sail area and better in light airs. The mast is brand new with a state of the art Proctor/Dyform rig being chosen and subsequently fitted in 2013. The new mast is the same weight as the original mast and retains the same fore and aft bend characteristics but has been strengthened in the mid sections to strengthen the rig athwartships. She has a new Selden boom with three reefing points and a new Selden gas sprung vang. The vang is fitted with a Dyneema 24:1 purchase adjustable from both sides making reefing a breeze when short handed. New lightweight, Selden spinnaker pole with downhaul to both sides. The backstay is Dyneema with 48:1 purchase lead to both sides allowing easy adjustment.
This boat has been very successful at club level during the present ownership. Due to her set up she will appeal to both the short handed cruising yachtsman who intends to coast hop with his family or to those who just want to race. The sail wardrobe is extensive and whether cruising or racing there is a suitable set up for all.
