Deck and Hull
The roomy cockpit is designed for safety and efficiency, even when sailing short-handed. All sail control lines are led aft to the cockpit, and all winches are self-tailing for one-handed use.
The fully batten main, lazy jacks and the stack pack (mainsail cover incorporated into the sail) gives you a mainsail system that is easy to use in a shorthanded situation. When you drop the mainsail it conveniently drops into the cover. So the sail is put away before you get back to the dock. Even mainsail reefing, and awkward chore on many boats, is quick and easy on the 38, thanks to our single-line reefing system with cockpit controls.
The T-shaped cockpit can accommodates an extra-large-diameter wheel, to allow a skipper to sit off to the side for a clear view of the sails. With the cockpit’s generous proportions, there’s room for the tallest sailor to relax.
The transom boarding ladder with the stern rail gate, allows safe, and quick access from the water to the cockpit. A hand held shower in the cockpit can be used for showering or rinsing down the cockpit.
At the forward end of a Caliber is another handy, functional feature; our distinctive anchor roller platform. Sturdily constructed of teak and stainless, the platform simplifies anchor handling and reduces the risk of the anchor deployment and retrieval from chipping the hull’s gel coat.
How swiftly a boat sails, how well she handles and how she weathers the sea are the direct result of her design. At Caliber, our efforts at the drawing board have produced a rare blend of spirited performance and seaworthiness, so that Calibers are as well-suited for off-shore sailing as for cruising the coast.
One key to this combination lies in Calibers’ performance Cruising Keel. With skeg-hung rudder also provides directional stability to enable a Caliber to keep a true course, even though pounding seas, without requiring constant attention at the helm.
Seaworthiness, comfort, performance the Caliber 38 has it all.
Accommodations
The Caliber 38 clever design and uncompromising craftsmanship continue below decks, in a layout that once more emphasizes comfort and convenience.
Entry to the cabin is easy by way of our accessible companionway and large platform steps. The steps and vertical engine partition are totally removable for easy engine access. Inside, we’ve taken advantage of the Caliber 38’s beam to create a luxurious live-aboard interior. The interior is well-illuminated and richly finished in teak. The Main Salon features ample seating on two settees, one of which converts to a berth. The twin-leaf dining table folds up against the bulkhead for additional room. There is bottle and additional storage built into the table bulkhead.
The sleeping quarters are true staterooms, expansive and private. Instead of a cramped V-Berth, there’s a full forward cabin with ample storage space and a generous offset berth. The roomy forward head features its own separate shower that’s enclosed by a Plexiglas door, not a plastic curtain. The same kind of comfort and convenience is provided in the aft stateroom, with its aft berth and large hanging locker. .The aft cabin berth is big enough for guest or can be used as a convenient sea berth.
We’ve located the aft head where it’s convenient to the cockpit. And with its two doors, one connects to the aft cabin and one the salon, so it can be access from either area without disturbing the other’s occupants. The aft head is completely outfitted with a shower.
Any cook will appreciate the Caliber 38’s efficient L-Shaped Galley. Included is a two-burner stove and oven, an icebox with Alder Barbour refrigeration/freezer, twin sinks, ample storage for food and utensils, and more than enough counter space to prepare multi-course meals.
Ventilation on the Caliber 38 is outstanding, with 14 opening portholes, 7 overhead hatches, solar ventilation fan and two deck cowls each strategically place for optional air circulation.
