This professionally built steel cutter was built in Australia, she is known as an Adams 45 and was designed as a comfortable long distance blue water cruiser. While you might not have heard of many Adams, here in the states, they are a very popular blue water cruiser in parts down under, with over 100 Adams cruising the world and many in Australia. This Adams 45 is a 1989 steel hull completed in 1990.
We actually know the boat really well in that we sold her in 2006 as a full-time cruising home for a family of four with kids aged 6 and 9. They immediately understood what a great boat she is with the perfect layout and incredible construction. Her owner captain is a professional in yacht maintenance and the owner of a top quality boatyard in Annapolis MD. He brought all of his expertise and resources to bear on making Osprey the most amazing cruising home for his family. He started by doing a big refit and fitting out with all her new cruising equipment. A full year was spent year upgrading all of her systems to suit their vision and needs, including making her self-sustaining at anchor and at sea with four solar panels, two wind generators, Spectra Cape Horn watermaker, and new communications systems. They upgraded all of her deck hardware to Harken, adding adjustable genoa cars and a raised mainsail traveler to make sail trimming quick and easy. After experimenting over time with her small third jib as a hank-on sail, they added a third roller furler so that this small jib could be quickly and easily deployed for maneuvering in tight spaces or for evolutions like sailing off the anchor. They also repowered her so that they knew they could fully depend on her engine if need be. Priorities were for the boat to be safe, comfortable, and a pleasure to sail, and she has been all of those things and more.
Not every boat gets such an amazing home with a capable owner. Throughout these last ten years Osprey has been loved and maintained and upgraded as needed to continue to be the most amazing cruising platform for the family. I think he fixed a few other boats along the way. It's a great skill to have! And Osprey a lucky boat.
What the owners love most about Osprey’s is a layout that suits the family. The master cabin aft can be closed for privacy and quiet and the kids like sharing a cabin forward but having separate bunks so they, too, can have their own space. Every cruiser needs room to work on maintenance and upgrades and Osprey has a full workshop with plenty of storage for critical boat maintenance gear, and a designated space for work on projects. Under sail, the aft cabin enables an off-watch adult to get comfortable rest but also be up the steps and into the cockpit in a second if the need arises, without waking anyone forward. At anchor, the well-lit main cabin provides a beautiful but comfortable space, with excellent ventilation thanks to the hatch placement throughout the boat. Built for the ocean and for sailors, Osprey’s ergonomic layout means you never go far from a handhold when you’re sailing in rough conditions. The owners have lived aboard her in all conditions—on the hook for months at a time, and even at a marina during a Maryland winter—and have always felt perfectly at home aboard
During a four year cruise, Osprey traveled as far southwest as Panama, spending a winter in the San Blas Islands, as far west as Guatemala, as far east as Bermuda and as far northeast as Nova Scotia. Whether in the hot tropics or in the cool, foggy climes of Canada, Osprey is a dry, comfortable home. She is a joy to sail, easily tracking 170-mile days at sea.
Osprey is coming to the market because the kids have grown and are off to college and it is time to downsize. Read about their adventures on Osprey in the column Wendy wrote for six years for Cruising World called Osprey’s Flight and start planning your own adventures aboard!

Osprey is a two stateroom center cockpit boat that is perfect for a family of four! Starting forward, in the forepeak is the anchor locker and a beautiful workshop just aft with over 6’4” standing headroom. Next aft is the kids or crew cabin with two bunk berths, which can be converted to one double upper berth and a smaller lower. This cabin is where the Osprey kids lived for about four years of full time cruising. There is a Refleks diesel heater it the cabin that heated the entire boat in cold weather. Next aft is the main salon with the galley to starboard and dining area to port. Off this cabin to starboard aft is the amazing head complete with a tub and shower and giant access to the starboard side of the engine compartment. From the main salon looking aft on the port side is the navigation station with the ships office and and all electronics for navigation and communication and weather information. The glorious owner’s cabin is a huge and comfortable master cabin with a centerline double berth and dressing seats port and starboard as well as storage and his and her lockers. From the aft cabin you can access to the cockpit which is a wonderful feature.
