The Oyster 82 Pilot House is based on the proven characteristics of the Oyster 80, but with more length, more freeboard, and with a totally original deck and cockpit configuration. Designed to respond to the call for an Oyster with a package of "big boat" features, the 82 Pilot House has addressed the focal issue of what owners should really expect in a yacht of this size. The deck design has raised bulwarks that allow the convenience of almost flat side decks, which all but hide the yacht's forward coachroof while retaining an outboard profile with a pleasing shapely sheer. The outboard profile of the saloon is practically that of an ultra-sleek, deck saloon type which blends subtly into a split cockpit. The cockpit separates the helm station and sail handling controls from a spacious area for non-working crew and guests forward. The cockpit is wide enough to allow good access from the companionway without disturbing the guest area. Under the cockpit seating there is sufficient space for gear or life raft stowage, and a cockpit drinks fridge. Access from the side deck to either cockpit area is made easier by a cutaway coaming. The cutter rig of the Oyster 82 makes full use of the 40-50,000 miles of experience gained since the first Oyster 80 was launched. The standard spar is configured for an efficient fully-battened mainsail, with lazy jacks for ease of handling. Power winches and hydraulic headstay and cutterstay furlers are all included - so the Oyster 82 is set up for push-button sail handling with a small crew. For owners preferring powered inmast furling this is offered as a no-cost option. The stern incorporates a large bathing - boarding platform with a flush-fitted hot and cold deck shower. The Oyster 82 has a large lazarette locker to stow the usual cruising amenities expected in a yacht of this size. The foredeck area can incorporate an optional dinghy dock, which provides for the stowage of a dinghy in an almost flush location forward of the mast. With a fitted tonneau cover and tie-downs, the RIB may be carried in this position while at sea (as an alternative to conventional davits) and - with the dinghy launched - it will make an ideal, discreet, sunbathing position. Below, the Oyster 82 offers a package of "big boat" features in an interior layout made possible by full standing headroom under the cockpit floor. As a result, a centerline aft passageway provides access to a spacious ensuite owner's stateroom and two guest ensuite cabins (large enough to be configured with double or side-by-side single berths). The pilot house area has seating with direct line-of-sight vision through the pilot house windows ensuring a panoramic outboard vista. On the port side this area incorporates a full size navigation station with a dual autopilot control, so the vessel may easily be steered from an inside, protected position when conditions allow. The main engine, generator, and other equipment is installed in the machinery room, which runs full width under the pilot house floor. This area is accessed from a door in the lower saloon and has its own emergency exit. Large fuel and water tanks are located under the side decks, on each side of the machinery room. In addition to the main engine and generator there is sufficient space for most of the vessel's electro-mechanical systems such as watermaker, battery charger, inverter, etc. Headroom in the machinery room varies, but is up to around 5'0" - 1.52 m - more than adequate for the type of access required. The pilot house area leads down via a stylish stairway to the lower saloon, which extends to use the full beam of the vessel, also using the space under the sidedecks. This area may be configured to the owner's choice, but typically provides room for a dining table for 10 settings plus a lounging area opposite. This part of the vessel feels very large, as it is open to the pilot house and benefits from using the entire space allocated to both cabin areas. Forward on the port side is a day head, then a third ensuite guest cabin which could have a double or upper - lower berths. Opposite is a further day head and a very spacious galley with extensive counter space, refrigeration, and stowage for long periods at sea. The galley links to a pair of crew cabins with a shared WC forward, so that the crew and the galley area are effectively separated from the owner's party. The Oyster 82 Pilot House offers most of the benefits of a commissioned one-off, but with less risk and expense. Oyster's experience building nine hundred yachts over twenty-five years is an obvious advantage. The Oyster 82 offers proven performance and predictable standards of build quality.
