The Oyster 69 is a return to the genuine dual-purpose cruiser racer. There are very few yachts that can claim real potential on the racing circuit and genuine liveaboard cruising accommodations. Rob Humphreys and the Oyster Design Team have been looking at developments in composite material and concluded that an opportunity now exists to create a true dual purpose yacht. The UK-based SP Group have created an award winning system called Sprint, a resin infusion system, which allows leading edge composite technology to be applied to series boat building using female tooling. Oyster has invested in a special facility to build composite hulls using the Sprint system, an essential part of which, in common with current Grand Prix and America's Cup yachts, is a high temperature cure in a specially designed oven. SP Technologies, world leaders in this field, will undertake structural engineering. Using a combination of vacuum consolidated carbon fibre, Kevlar and high performance epoxy, the Oyster 69 will achieve strength-to-weight ratios never before seen on this type of vessel. The interior joinery will be to a standard that is typically Oyster, but weight will be minimised by the use of cored panels and other modern materials. Carbon will be used for composite bulkheads and rudder. Weight considerations will be a factor in configuring the yacht, but there is no reason why the needs of the genuine liveaboard cruising sailor should not be incorporated with few compromises.
