'Whiteheaven' was purchased brand new by her previous owners, who sailed her around the Mediterranean for 18 months before crossing the Atlantic, Pacific, and finally back home to Pittwater (Sydney. Australia), where she was sold to her current owners. She then sailed down to Melbourne, where she became a resident of the Sandringham Yacht Club, where her owners kept her berthed for some time, attending to Sunday Social racing and regularly cruising her gently around Port Phillip and Geelong, to Portsea and Sorrento.
When her owners moved north to Port Macquarie a few years ago she followed them to their new home, sailing up the coast to her new berth in Port Macquarie, where she remained their pride and joy, and who regularly upgraded her with top of the range equipment, regular maintenance and service, when not enjoying exploring the East Coast or relaxing on board.
The Bavaria 50 Cruiser (2005 to 2007) is a remarkable boat, capable of a good turn of speed in light airs (7.5 knots in 14 knots beam reach when tested), but built for serious cruising in mind (you can take a look at the interesting Boatpoint review on http://www.boatpoint.com.au/editorial/reviews/2005/cruiser-aft-cockpit/bavaria-50-cruiser-8634)
In spite of her cruising keel (6'1" only), she points close to the wind and responds effortlessly to the helm. Her well balance rig minimizes weather helm and her generous reserve buoyancy forward contributes once again to her sea-kindliness. The Bavaria 50 Cruiser is nevertheless a powerful boat, which standard versions saw them sometimes difficult to handle without electric winches. 'Whiteheaven' is fitted with top of the range Lewmar electric ST winches and a new MC Intyre boom brake as her owners would rather relax when the wind starts to climb, rather than sweat on the grinder.
If younger Bavaria models experienced sometimes dramatic design changes, such as larger windows (2010's), square windows and flush hatches (2014+), only to see them reverted to more logical designs for seagoing vessels not long after, the more traditional, stronger built pre-GFC models remain an intelligent, serious blue water cruiser, readily enjoyable whether you never wish to venture out of the bays or on the contrary wish to sail into the sunset. On 'Whiteheaven', everything is oversized for strength, durability and comfort at sea, with the signature luxury interior and vast but safe cockpit, huge volume of actually live-able accommodation (large cabins but still awesome space in the main living area, unlike some models who sacrifice the stateroom and ensuite for a larger amount of cabins which remain unused most of the time, or who extend the saloon only to make the galley tiny and hard to use in the seaway. Another great point for those of us who like to have everything on board but hate to step over bags and boxes because of lack of storage, the Bavaria 50 Cruiser's designers have managed to increase the amount of proper, dedicated storage needed without compromising on the feeling of space. Stepping into the saloon after visiting a 54' yacht I was surprised to see that the accommodation did not only feel a lot larger, but was also able to provide far more storage space throughout. Whereas longer boats often see a too-large sail locker, or too-tiny crew bunks in the bow actually reduce the accommodation below, the Cruiser 50 has a much more balance need for interior living space / storage, and smaller sail storage, which is then used more efficiently. The cockpit seats hide two huge lockers, which are far easier to access than a sail locker forward anyway, and in spite of her large amount of blue water cruising gear, everything has a place and there is no clutter anywhere. Another good trait is her step-through cockpit, which makes boarding easily from a dinghy or at the marina, where straight transom boats, even those with the newly designed hydraulic drop-down duckboard which cannot always be used in marinas means having to climb off the side in sometimes precarious conditions.
Back in 2005, when cost-cutting did not apply and large boats were built at much higher price tag for their size, a figure head like the Bavaria 50 had to impress for her quality of build and material used, lavishness of timber used inside and out (solid light mahogany interior and 12mm teak toe-rails for example), and shipwrights built finishing touches such as lovely rounded corners to doors and cabinetry (as opposed to square cut to minimize building costs), etc. The result is a timeless, beautiful yacht that actually speaks of the sea, and which if maintained properly will retain her value through time, intense post GFC yacht depreciation and fast changing fashion trends.
Taking a closer look at 'Whiteheaven' now, her Gelcoat is original and still very thick, which means that her topsides, if polished once a year, will continue to look new for years to come. There will be no need to re-spray 'Whiteheaven' for at least another decade. Her decks are non-skid molded Gelcoat in excellent condition, with no chip or dings anywhere. Her hatches do not leak, and are protected by removable covers to stop them from UV damage. Near the bow is a sail, rope locker big enough for fenders, spinnaker, sheets etc. It is designed in a way as not to impede on the accommodation below.
The cockpit is beautiful, relaxing heaven when at rest, but also offers a perfectly protected area when at sea, with her new dodger, Bimini and in-fill, to remain dry when raining or when needing to shelter from the sun. The lovely solid teak varnished table and seats can comfortably accommodate a large lunch company (at least 10 people), and is designed with a drained center storage area perfect for a bag of ice and some cold drinks, saving having to climb up and down into the galley to refill your glass. The wide companionway leads down a few teak steps down into the main cabin.
Aft on either side is a huge double cabin, with hanging storage and plenty of secure portholes for light and cross ventilation. There is good headroom over the beds, with full headroom about half-way down each berth. Each aft cabin has its own guest head / shower area with wash basin and storage.
Forward of the main cabin is double bunk cabin to port, with storage and good size single berths. Through another door is the stateroom, with island queen size berth, settee to starboard, and small desk or powder area to port. Hanging cupboards and a multitude of storage lockers will ensure you find a place for your whole wardrobe. A flat screen TV (complete with DVD and mobile digital TV receiver) is mounted on the wall opposite the bed. A door leads to the well proportioned ensuite with head and shower.
Back into the saloon, the beautifully and recently re-upholstered lounge curves around a mahogany table with opposite settee, which also provides convenient storage. The saloon sits 10 comfortably and hides yet more storage lockers. The floor is beautiful and unblemished, as is the timber-work throughout.
The galley, U shape and safe to use in the sea way, is equipped with ample storage, a top accessed eutectic fridge of good size and a separate front opening freezer. The 3 X burners stove is installed on Gymbals, and includes oven and grill. There is pressurized hot and cold water to the double stainless steel sink. There are Corian lids for everything to increase food preparation areas, and a folding lid/splashback for the stove. There are 240V in the galley for additional appliances.
To starboard is the navigation table, with repeaters for the new Raytheon Chartplotter, switchboard, etc. The Nav table is big enough for a half chart and the seat is comfortable at sea. 'Whiteheaven' is equopped with all the marine electronics needed for safe travel, including HF and VHF radio, and is Australia Registered, meaning that this costly excercise has already been taken care off if you wish to take the boat overseas.
Back in the cockpit, the twin wheels allow good visibility and access to the navigation instruments, autopilot etc. Below one of the helm seat is the dedicated LPG storage. The LPG system is certified. On the step is a hot and cold deck shower, perfect for a rinse out after swimming.
Equipped to cater for an ample demand of electricity, her batteries were recently changed for a whole new bank, and are kept fully charged by a combination of solar and wind power, as well as her powerful alternator when running. The boat is also fitted with a sine-wave alternator, so you can run your laptop without having to worry about damage.
