SWAN 46 – SPECIFICATIONS - HULL # 417 September 2006
The hull is of single skin construction using glassfibre reinforced isopolyester laminate with vinylester skincoat. Multiaxial and unidirectional fibers in selected areas. Structural bulkheads are of marine plywood laminated to hull and deck with foam strips between. Stiffener flanges are unidirectional lay-ups over hollow cores. Engine beds are of GRP. CE approval for category A Ocean.
White gelcoat on topsides, cabin and cockpit. Boot stripe / cove stripe and coaming stripe light blue gel coat. Uncolored gelcoat below waterline. Epoxy barrier coat layers sprayed on bottom, and finished with antifouling of Micron CSC Shark white.
Frers design fin keel with bulb to minimize draft and maximize righting moment. The keel is a lead casting with antimony and carefully finished to accurate shape. High-tensile stainless steel bolts and cast-in.
RUDDER AND STEERING SYSTEM
Larger GRP rudder with foam core carefully fairing to design shape. Rudder post is a tapered hi-tensile stainless steel stock, supported by two self- aligning JP-3 bearings. Weed deflector in front of rudder. Steering sheaves provided with guards to prevent jamming of steering wire. Strong aluminum quadrant with end stops bolted to rudder stock wire SS steering cables. Two 41 inch stainless wheels with elkhide cover, 1.8 turns H.O. to H.O. Composite pedestals with roller bearings, brake, and crash bar. Emergency tiller store in aft cockpit locker. THROUGH HULL FITTINGS
Bronze sea cocks for all through-hull connections below waterline, finished flush with outside and located in accessible positions.
Part of the transom folds out manually to form a platform with ladder up to deck, and providing access to the transom stowage area. Separate SS swimming ladder. Helmsman's seat and push pit can be opened for convenient access.
Deck is of sandwich construction, using multiaxial glass fiber reinforced isopolyester laminate, with low-density closed cell foam core, and is bonded to the hull. High-density core under deck fittings. Unteaked deck surfaces finished in white gelcoat.
Two primary sheet winches Lewmar 54 CEST, electric two speeds located on cockpit coamings. Two main sheet winches Lewmar 54 CEST, electric two speeds located on aft on cockpit coamings for helmsman to reach. Two halyard winches Lewmar 48 CEST, electric two speeds located on aft cabin top. Recessed Lewmar electrical anchor on foredeck.
STEMHEAD FITTING AND CHAIN PLATES
Polished stainless steel stemhead fitting with housing and roller for Delta 44 pound anchor with securing clamps. Chain run thru a underdeck sheave to windlass. Chain sheave has a hinged cover plate. Stainless steel chainplates, headstay recessed for under-deck furler. Main shroud chainplates bolted to reinforced web frames. Backstay chainplates attached to hull structure.
Custom Main sheet traveler on cabin top with control lines led under deck to mainsheet winches with clutches. Harken aluminum jib sheet tracks with two cars with towing lines led to mainsheet winches with clutches. Two pin stops.
FITTINGS FOR RUNNING RIGGING
Harken lead blocks for halyards, lifts, reefing, and main sheet at mast partners. The lines are led aft below deck to clutches in front of the halyard winches.
Main sheet led under deck, further aft to both sides of cockpit with clutches. Jib sheet with turning blocks lead to forward cockpit winches. Gennaker sheet blocks each side on aft deck

Pulpit, push pit and lifeline stanchions 600 mm high of stainless steel, with bases bolted thru deck. Spacing confirming to ORC requirements. Lifeline gates both side amidships and in push pit. Life lines are uncovered SS 1x19 wire.
Hood for companionway hatch, flush with cabin top and including sprayhood recess. Dorade vents, lazarette, cockpit and foredeck hatches. Composite mast collar.
WOODWORK ON DECK
Laid teak 9 mm nominal thickness in cockpits, on side decks, and on bathing platform, glued and vacuum bagged without screws. Removable teak footrests for helmsman, 2 pcs.
HATCHES AND WINDOWS
On fore large hinged anchor locker hatch. Lewmar Medium Profile recessed deck hatches, one Size 50 in forward head, one Size 60 in forward cabin, and one Size 60 in main cabin. Mosquito screens for main companionway, mosquito screens and blinds for all standard Lewmar Medium Profile deck hatches. Four fixed coaming windows. Four openable coaming port lights - in port aft cabin, aft head, galley, and navigation area. Two port lights from port aft cabin to cockpit. Main companionway lockable sliding hatch of tinted acrylic with sliding drop board. In cockpit hinged GRP hatches to lazarette, and to stowage locker with space for life raft. Under helmsmen seat gas bottle locker port side, stowage starboard side.

Custom steering pedestal crash bars with B&G FFD and auto pilot on each crash bar. Also with Furuno 7 inch LCD screen for plotter and radar.. Mug holders on each crash bar.
All joiner work in the living areas is done in accordance with the best yacht building practice, using first-grade materials. Teak with hand rubbed statin finish is used for the visible woodwork. Also non-visible woodwork is varnished, although not to the same finish. Floorboards with laid oak veneer, providing access to the bilge. Topsides where visible lined with teak or alternatively white painted wooden battens. Overhead lined with removable paneling. Cabinets, tables, bureaus, seats, dressers etc. have rounded corners. Doors, partitions and paneling are teak-faced plywood or foam. Self-engaging latches with bumpers to hold doors in open position. Hanging lockers are equipped with rods and hooks, and their doors are provided with louvres. Drawers are secured with latches. Handrails at entrance and in heads. Companionway ladder with non-slip steps.
All fixed berths have foam mattresses over Scandi-Flex battens. Double berths with 5 inch thick mattresses. All bunks with leeclothes. Alcantara upholstery on mattresses with piping in same color in fore and cabin cabins. Leather upholstery, Lapuan Nahka for saloon sofa and chairs. Curtains, Orient Occident Saba.
Large stowage area in forepeak for anchor and fenders. Watertight collision bulkhead aft end of locker.

Wet exhaust system with fiberglass silencer, discharge near transom. Silencer provided with drain tap.
Thermostat-controlled fresh water cooling with heat exchanger on engine. A separate heat exchanger for the consumable fresh water is included in the same circuit making hot water available whenever the engine is running. Seawater intake with strainer. Discharge through exhaust system.
Fuel capacity 90.8 US gallons, in two stainless tanks with gauges. One filler line with strainer for each tank. Tanks vented to deck edge. Fuel filter/water separator with water alarm and shut off valve in feed line to engine.
The engine has its own starting battery, with a parallel switch to service batteries.
ENGINE COCKPIT CONTROLS
Engine control ON/OFF switch. Single lever control for the throttle and gear shift. Control lighting for starting and service battery charging. Engine start / stop buttons. Engine coolant temperature and oil pressure gauge both with alarms. Tachometer with hour meter.
STERN GEAR AND PROPELLER
Sail drive with Flex-O-Fold 3-blade folding propeller 18" LH
Retractable Maxpower VIP 150 bow thruster installed in forepeak forward of watertight bulkhead. Control buttons on deck at starboard steering wheel. Two optima batteries charged by 25 amp charger and splitter on service alternator on main engine.
Sea water hoses of reinforced PVC tubing, fresh water hoses of nylon tubing. Water tanks of polyethene provided with baffles, inspection cover, sounding plug, and vent pipe.
Hot and old pressure water with cold water back-up foot pump in galley. Water capacity 132 US gallon's in polyethene tanks with gauges. One filler line from deck terminating at valve chest under saloon floor. Tank vent pipes terminate at galley sink. Oras Single lever mixing faucets for washbasins and galley sinks. The consumable water can be heated either with engine cooling water, or optionally with a heating element working on AC. Isotherm hot water tank, capacity 10 US gallons. Deck shower with hot and cold water, mounted under helmsman's seat.
Seawater spout with foot pump in galley. Deck wash using sea water, mounted in forepeak locker. Sea water and fresh water is used for toilet flushing.
SINKS AND WASH BASINS
Galley sinks drained through sea cock. Washbasin and shower trays drained with electrical pumps to sea cocks.
Three manual Whale Titan 26 US gallons per minute. One electric bilge pump. All discharge outlets above waterline
Raritan PHEII electric/manual toilets using sea water and fresh water for flushing in forward and aft heads. Y-valve for discharge either to holding tank or overboard.
For forward toilet 16 US gallons stainless holding tank, for aft toilet 13 US gallons. Holding tanks emptied by electrical pump or deck suction.
115 volt Microwave built into galley power from inverter or shore power.
Stainless steel three-burner "Force 10” gas stove with oven and grill, gimbaled and provided with fiddles. Flame failure protection on burners. Manual gas shut adjacent to stove in galley. Remote controlled shut-off and leak detector near gas bottle with control switch in galley. Gas installation according to ISO 10239.
Battery driven "Isotherm" refrigeration unit with separate thermostat control for refrigerator and freezer enabling freezer to be used as a refrigerator also. Refrigeration and freezer are sea water cooled.
Natural ventilation in all cabins with Dorade inlets and openable deck hatches / portholes. Exhaust blowers in galley and heads. Engine compartment, Air inlet with water trap, outlet with blower. Battery boxes Ventilated to outside of yacht.
Webasto AT 3500 diesel heater wit controls in main salon.
24 volt DC system with insulated return. 115 Volt AC system. Wires are sized to minimize voltage drop. For lightning protection the headstay, backstay, main shroud chain plates and mast step are grounded to ballast keel bolts with heavy cable.
One battery set 440 Ah, 5 hour rating (528 Ah 20 h rating) 24 V gel cell type for general service. The engine has is own AGM starting battery 46 Ah 12 V. Batteries located in a ventilated GRP boxes. 12 volt outlet at chart table and in cockpit. Battery parallel switch for engine and service batteries.
Interior: Two reading lights over double berths, recessed halogen dome lights overhead. Outboard pointing overhead spotlights in port aft cabin, in saloon and in forward cabin. Indirect light over bookshelf in Saloon port side. Flexible chart light and red night lights in galley and navigation station. Separate entrance light.
Outside: Downward floodlight on forward side of mast, spreader lights, and Windex light. Compass lights with dimmer, boom light with dimmer and switch.
Navigation light: Red and green side lights on pulpit. White on push pit. White bow light on forward side of mast
The service batteries are charged by a 110 amp alternator with three step regulation on the main engine, or a 50 amp Mass Battery charger working on AC power. There is a separate 60 amp alternator on engine for the starting batteries
115 volt, 30 amp, 60 Hz shore power inlet provided with polarity alarm, main switch, and shore power cable. 24/2500 VA 115 V Mass Sine Inverter, including transfer switch.
PANELS AND CONTROLS
DC main panel: Using trip-free circuit breaker switch type. "Mastervolt" Master Link, digital battery monitor displaying Volt, Amp's and Amp hours. Switches for interior and navigation lights.
