Pendleton Yacht Yard has revived this iconic One-Design racing class with a modern twist. Traditional carvel-planked hulls are now being built in fiberglass and gelcoated or awlgripped for a durable and low-maintenance finish.
New Wave is fiberglass hull No. 5, and in keeping with tradition, the rest of her is as original as possible, reusing parts from a 1935 Dark Harbor 20 hull No. 10. From salvaging the mahogany-trimmed cabin top to restoring bronze hardware to refinishing the original spars to reusing the lead keel, the Pendleton team has made New Wave both beautiful and functional. New Wave has been engineered to have the identical performance characteristics of the original boats built in the 1930's & 1940's, including the continuted use of wooden mast and booms. The original hull shape has been accurately replicated in a 3D model, and was used to computer generate the new hull mold.
Like other Dark Harbor 20s, she is nimble and exciting to sail, yet well-balanced in her ability to meet varying weather conditions. The Dark Harbor 20, design No. 68 by renowned naval architects Sparkman & Stephens, has been a fixture of midcoast Maine since the 1930s. Twenty-one sailboats were originally built from 1935-1942. All but two still proudly sail today, a testament to good design, sound construction, and the dedication of their owners. The majority of the fleet are seen in the summers racing around the waters of Gilkey Harbor and Islesboro, Maine.
New Wave is a low maintenance, low cost opportunity to become a part of a truly esteemed sailing and racing class experience. In the words of naval architect Olin Stephens:
"They are nimble, exciting to race, and typically carry a crew of three in addition to the skipper. Displacement is light and beam is moderate towards narrow; the hull easily driven. Draft of the fin keel is also moderate. The fractional sloop rig seems suitably proportioned. The boats are also attractive in appearance, as would be expected of a class sailed in this stylish and long established enclave."
