Robert Perry, in designing the Norstar 40, took the concepts of stability, speed and comfort one step further. The Norstar 40’s hull has a proven, efficient shape. She has a fine entry with straight waterlines for speed on the wind. Her firm midship bilges give her stiffness. And her wide beam is carried well aft to extend her useful sailing length. It also creates room for her very large cockpit and extra interior space.
She boasts a large rudder which is hung on a high-aspect-ratio skeg, a technique that produces superb steering and exceptional tacking ability. Her keel is of the external lead type, shaped in a laminar foil section which allows the lead ballast to be placed at the lowest 40 percent of the keel plan form. The low placement of ballast produces excellent stability and acts as a shoe that will absorb the shock of an accidental grounding without endangering the integrity of the hull.

A unique feature of Norstar’s interiors is the interface between glass hull and bulkheads. Most builders grind the veneer off their bulkheads and cover the resulting glass overlay with heavy trim. Notice that Norstar found a way to eliminate this bulky trimming. Norstar’s method results in a stronger than normal bulkhead attachment and is more pleasing to the eye.
Other examples of ‘top drawer’ execution are insulation under berths and settee cushions, interiors of lockers that are finished as if they were always exposed to view, solid teak framing around openings in the teak and holly cabin sole. The molded fiberglass shower that is not only unique but very practical.
Aside from subtle refinements and innovations, there is nothing extreme about the Norstar 40’s open and functional interior layout. It is a well proven plan, which you will appreciate long after the novelty of newness wears off. She’s a triumph.
The Norstar’s deck is a textbook example of how to make a deck efficient, safe and beautiful, all at the same time. Everything required to sail a yacht has been considered and provided. You see it in the molded bosses and recesses for hardware, hatches and ventilators. All lines run aft. The Norstar 40 can be easily handled by two persons and a good sailor would have no trouble single handing.
Her cockpit is identical to the Norstar 44. The non-skid surface that is at once easy to keep clean and as gripping to the foot when wet as when dry.
The bow features a molded anchor well for ground tackle. An anchor roller projects forward from the stem to help you retrieve the anchor without scratching the hull. Not the least of her exterior virtues is the ease with which her bright appearance can be maintained.QUALITY IS NOT A GOAL – IT'S A REQUIREMENT
Norstar never builds a yacht down to a price – we’ve always built up to a standard. That standard is the absolute best.
Each layer of fiberglass is carefully saturated and squeegeed to obtain an optimum ratio of glass to resin. The strength is in the glass and the lamination is extraordinarily strong. The hull is further strengthened by a network of longitudinal and transverse members that give the hull an extremely strong and rigid ‘backbone’. The hull remains in the mold while stringers, transverse stiffeners, cabin sole, bulkheads and furniture are bonded in place. When the hull is finally lifted from the mold, it retains the exact shape given by her designer.
The interior is made of the finest woods and seasoned lumber and built to a standard expected only in the finest custom yachts.
The electrical and plumbing systems are designed for ample capacity, safety and convenience. A custom master panel protects each circuit while voltage and ammeters monitor power. Though carefully concealed from view, wiring and piping is neatly run and accessible.
The engine and fuel system are installed by master mechanics. After installation the engine is test run to make sure that the installation is sound and that everything works as it should.
If a weakness should ever be found in a Norstar, it will not be at the hull / deck joint. The hull and deck overlap each other by 3 inches. Thoroughly bedded with marine sealant and through bolted every 4-1/4 inches, the joint is capped by a full length aluminum toe rail. Not only is the joint strong, it is truly watertight!
