SPARHAWK is an outstanding example of the popular Ohlson 38 that has benefited from excellent care and upgrading by knowledgeable owners. Her classic good looks and level of maintenance are a welcome addition to any harbor. The Ohlson 38 was featured in Richard Henderson's book Choice Yacht Designs. A PDF of the chapter is available on request. I have owned what may be the wood prototype to the Ohlson 38 since 1986, and can attest to the quality of build and performance. Sparhawk is well suited to coastal cruising as well as offshore sailing and is highly recommended.
This elegant, classic, dark blue, fiberglass yacht with a varnished African mahogany cabin trunk, cockpit and interior was designed by Einer Ohlson for fast, comfortable cruising. She was fully modernized with racing-level electronics, complete ocean-cruising electrical system including top-of-line autopilot, hot & cold pressurized water, new standing and running rigging, new custom aluminum boom, new electric windlass, self-tailing winches and North sails in 1998. Her modest displacement, equipment, mahogany wood and long overhangs combine modern-like performance of 6+ knots with head-turning classic aesthetic appeal.
Below deck is bright and spacious due to 6’ 2” headroom, two transparent smoke-gray acrylic hatches, satin finished African mahogany joiner-work, white overhead and bulkheads and bright, varnished cabin soles. The forward cabin is a double-berth with custom filler and 6-inch mattresses and v-berth filler with plenty of storage space in mahogany drawers under and shelves above.
Next aft is the head compartment with doors fore and aft with a Lavac head, hot & cold pressurized water and shower with an electric sump pump. Solar ventilator fans circulate air both in and out of the compartment. Opposite the head is a large hanging locker.
The open main saloon with a smoke-gray acrylic hatch providing light and ventilation features a custom-made folding teak table to seat 4 with slide-out settee berths port and starboard, a starboard pilot/sea berth and port side custom mahogany book case and 6 fixed ports with curtains. All berths have lee cloths. The L-shaped galley to port is equipped with a gimbaled Taylor stove and oven, a large ice chest with a SeaFrost cold plate for ice trays and refrigeration. The stainless galley sink has pressure hot and cold water. The full- sized nav table and station is to starboard with a custom instrument station with stowage below. A large quarter-berth extends aft over the battery storage compartment. Engine access is under the companionway steps.
Electronics include integrated Brooks and Gatehouse instruments, below deck autopilot, Northstar 951X GPS chart plotter, Icom M59 VHF. The electrical system consists of five Group 27 batteries, a high output alternator, a 110 V shore power system and Trucharge-40 multi-stage electric battery charger. A Victron 602-S battery monitor keeps track of house and starter battery status.
Topside, the standing and running rigging are of modern materials including synthetic rope for the running rigging. A bow pulpit, pushpit, and radar post are custom designed. Four 2-speed Lewmar self-tailing winches are in the cockpit. The cockpit includes multi-function displays on the bulkhead and the Edson binnacle. The mainsail is fully battened with a Dutchman flaking system. The custom aluminum boom has reefing winches and a Harken vang. On the foredeck is a Lofrans electric windlass, a deck and chain washdown outlet, and a Harken roller furling headsail system. To protect and preserve the varnish there is a custom cover for the coach roof and cockpit. For winter there is a Fairclough frame and cover for outside storage, not yet used.
This yacht’s racing history is impressive. She was well known along the Connecticut and Long Island shores as “Pageant”, placing second in the Bermuda Ocean Race in 1969. As “Copernicus” she raced to Hawaii in 1998 and has since cruised San Francisco Bay before moving (by truck) to New Hampshire and Maine where she has cruised every summer since 2002.

Refurbished 2017 to include new engine mounts, hoses and clamps, seals, rebuilt high pressure fuel pump, cleaned heat exchanger, new propeller shaft and coupling, cutlass bearing, new Hydralign three-blade 16.5" feathering propeller. Hurst 2:1 reduction gear. 1" SS shaft. app 6.5 knots at 2100 rpm/ max 7 knots. App 3140 engine hours as of July 2020.
