PRUDENCE is 36-foot clipper-bowed “NEREIA” ketch, designed by L. Francis Herreshoff and built in 1972 by Roger Kelsey of Branford, CT. This design is one in Herreshoff’s series of clipper-bowed, raked-masted ketches that include BOUNTY, MOHAWK, TIOGA, AND TICONDEROGA.
She sailed for 20 years as the builder’s personal yacht for annual trips between Long Island Sound and Nova Scotia. Her next owner maintained her with George Zacrone of Wickford, RI, where she continued to receive professional care and significant upgrades over the next 12 years.
In 2008-2009 PRUDENCE received an extensive refit that included construction of a new cabin house, interior, engine & systems, sails and rigging.
Currently she is based in New York, and each year makes the passage to and from Brooklin, Maine where she spends summers - often participating in classic yacht regattas along the way.
In late fall and early spring PRUDENCE earns her keep offering daysails in Raritan Bay and New York Harbors; and in summers she works for The WoodenBoat School in Brooklin, Maine - offering sailing courses and private charters.
Quick as her looks suggest, yet comfortable in a seaway - PRUDENCE is heavily built, dry, and a pleasure to sail. Her low aspect rig and 2:1 ballast ratio mean she seldom requires reefing.
Prudence is mahogany planked on oak frames, bronze fastened with a mahogany laid deck. Masts and spars are Sitka Spruce, sails are Dacron. Standing rigging is stainless steel with eye splices into bronze turnbuckles on the lower end. Running rigging is stainless wire rope and Dacron three strand. The engine is a Yanmar 32hp diesel that turns a three bladed reversing propeller. Rudder is outboard with tiller steering.
Below, Prudence sleeps six in five bunks, has a two-burner propane stove and a large icebox. The head includes a composting toilet and hand washing sink.

From “The Common Sense of Cruising Design”: “Nereia is a real little ship, one that can carry a figurehead gracefully…(she) is no chichi imitation of foreign yachts or a copy of those vessels which were developed to carry dead fish to market, but is a descendant of the purely American type of yacht that was developed for ladies and gentlemen to sail on before racing measurements spoiled the cruising yacht.”
