Rock ‘Oppa is a 30’ Royal Lowell designed lobster boat, built on speculation in 2016 by John Flanzer at Traditional Boat in Unity, ME. She’s every bit the shapely, iconic, traditional Maine lobster boat hull, built to the lines of a working boat design called The Royal whose plans were featured in Boatbuilding Down East, Lowell’s authoritative book on lobster boat building and design.
Rock ‘Oppa is traditionally built, cedar planked with white oak frames, floors and backbone timbers. Her painted finishes and dynel over plywood house-top and decks reflect her work boats roots and minimize upkeep. She has a spacious cockpit with a built-in transom bench and a removable deck box/table. Rock ‘Oppa’s mechanical systems are modern and uncomplicated, well suited to a boat of her size and use. Power comes from a quiet, low hour 260 hp 6-cylinder Yanmar diesel.
Down below Rock ‘Oppa has a nicely finished interior with white paint and varnished mahogany trim. There’s a counter, sink and 12v fridge to port, engine box on the centerline and storage above. The enclosed head is to starboard with a storage locker and diesel cabin heater just forward. The V-berth is a spacious 6’4” with removable insert.
